One of the most common questions we hear from new parents in our Strongsville office is, “When should I bring my child in for their first dental visit?”
The answer might surprise you. Dr. Butler recommends bringing your little one in around their first birthday. We know that might sound early. After all, your child may only have a few teeth by then, or even none at all. But those early visits are about so much more than counting teeth. They’re about setting your child up for a lifetime of healthy, positive experiences at the dentist.
We want that first visit to be easy, comfortable, and maybe even a little fun. Here’s what you can expect.

A Gentle Introduction
We don’t expect your child to sit perfectly still in the dental chair. In fact, we don’t even use the chair for the first visit. Instead, we use a “lap to lap” approach. You’ll sit in our exam chair and hold your child comfortably on your lap. Dr. Butler will sit across from you, and together you’ll gently guide your child through a quick look at their teeth, gums, and jaw.
If your child is feeling a little shy, that’s completely normal. We take things slow. Sometimes that first visit is just letting them get familiar with our office, meet a few friendly faces, and sit in the chair with you. We follow your child’s lead.
What We’re Looking For
Even with only a few teeth, there’s plenty we can check. Dr. Butler will look for:
- Early signs of tooth decay
- How the teeth are coming in
- The health of your child’s gums and soft tissues
- Jaw development and spacing
We’ll also talk with you about things like teething, thumb-sucking, and how to clean those new little teeth. You’ll leave with practical tips tailored to your child’s age and stage.
Why Starting Early Matters
A lot of parents wonder, “If there’s not much to do, why start so young?” There are a few really good reasons.
First, baby teeth matter more than most people realize. They hold space for permanent teeth and help with chewing, speech, and proper jaw development. If a baby tooth is lost too early due to decay, it can cause problems down the road.
Second, early visits help prevent problems before they start. Tooth decay is one of the most common chronic conditions in young children, but it’s also highly preventable. By starting around age one, we can help you build healthy habits from the very beginning.
And third, and maybe most importantly, we want your child’s first impression of the dentist to be a positive one. When kids start coming early, they grow up seeing the dental office as a familiar, welcoming place. There’s no fear to unlearn later. They simply know us as part of their regular health routine.
